How is Shingles Disease Related to the Herpes Virus Family?

December 25th, 2007 | by admin |

Shingles disease is caused by a virus named Herpes Zoster.  It is related to other viruses that cause genital herpes, cold sores, and Epstein Barr disease.  As with other virii in this family, it tends to affect the nervous system, and causes skin rashes and blisters.   Because shingles disease is  a recurrence of chicken pox, it does not carry the social stigma associated with the sexually transmitted diseases caused by other members of this virus family.
