How can one address months or years of unemployment due to a disability without scaring away employers?

Abijah Eternally asked:

My work history is patchy due to gaps caused by disability. Though it is illegal to discriminate based upon disability, employers know and see by my employment history that I cannot be as sure of a bet as a non-disabled person, hence will not give me a second look. Does anyone have suggestions how to get around this, especially with online applications? (I live in a rather small, less progressive city in PA)

You don’t have to explain anything on your resume. Only when you are asked during the interview, if they even do ask.
If you do feel the need to explain yourself, Include a brief explanation on your cover page

Online is probably not your vest venue. Try to hand in your application in person so you have a chance to make a good first impression.

Simply do not address it. Pick one or two old jobs that offer job experience for your resume. Any time gaps say you were a home maker or self employed during those periods. I am an employer and home commitment is definitely a good quality. Make your resume as full and detailed as possible but highlight education and public service verses to many segmented jobs. Let them want to meet you. Everyone needs a job just try to find one you can physically keep up with.
